The golden age of Dutch painting produced many landscape
painters. The two best- known are Jacob van Ruisdael and Nicolaes Berchem
(Haarlem 1622 – Amsterdam 1683). The Kunsthaus is proud to present
the very first retrospective of the work of Berchem, following the enthusiastic
response of the Zurich public two years ago to the exhibition of still lifes
by his father Pieter Claesz. Forty-five paintings, a dozen drawings and
twenty engravings give the visitor an insight into an œuvre that revolved
around a southern, Arcadian landscape that the artist himself never saw
firsthand.
