Berchem’s paintings herald the last phase of the golden
age of Dutch painting, as interest shifted from realistic representation
to idealised invention. His paintings live by the freshness of every brushstroke,
the powerfully accentuated light and the unremittingly intense atmosphere
that makes them into one of the high points of art history.
The Keeper of the Collection at the Kunsthaus, Christian Klemm, has arranged
this presentation of Berchem’s work in the historic museum rooms.
The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Frans Hals Museum
in Haarlem and the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. The catalogue (176 pages,
150 illustrations) is on sale in the Kunsthaus Shop or can be ordered for
CHF 49.–. The hardback English edition, available in bookshops, costs
CHF 56.–.
